Hello

Can anybody tell me if the EX Series will support the new 802.3at standard (PoE up to 25W) in the future? And, if so, whether it will require any hardware changes or just an OS upgrade?

Hi,

EX2200 will be the only switch from EX-series which would be capable to support 802.3at. There are no plans for this on EX3200 and EX4200.

The fact sheet for EX2200 indeed mentions:

The EX2200 PoE switches are also capable of supporting 802.3at* standards-based PoE+ for powering networked devices like multiple radio IEEE 802.11n wireless access points and video phones that may require more than the 12.95 watts available with IEEE 802.3af.

However under "Power Options" the same fact sheet mentions a total PoE budget of 405 Watts for the EX2200-48P-4G 48-port switches.

So the EX2200 supports 802.3at, but with a much smaller power supply than the EX4200 which supports only 802.3af. The EX4200 has power supply options up to 930 Watt.

What am I missing?

Maybe there are other power supply options available for the EX2200 that are not mentioned in the fact sheet?

Hi,

that means that you would not be able to deliver POE+ on all ports. In reality you would need only few POE+ ports (not on all 48 or 24 ports).

Is support for more power per EX2200 switch planned?

I think that a total PoE budget of 405 Watts per 48-port switch is just okay for 802.3af, but really too low for 802.3at.

It would be nice to have the same power supply options for EX2200 as for EX4200 (up to 930 Watt per switch).

    Can anyone tell me if there has been any update the capabilities of 802.3at for ex4200 series? Can they now support it or still not an option? Is the Ex2200 the only one currently capable of this support? What would be the number of ports total that it could support for 802.3at?

Hi, coming back to an old post, but we use EX2200 switches for Polycom VoIP phones, and been working great.

We've just purchased some Ubiquiti wireless network gear, that can be run via POE, but i think this requires a IEEE 802.at capable POE device.

I've read that the EX2200 DOES support IEEE 802.a, but i can't seem to configure the maximum power beyond 15.4watts.

Do i have to upgrade the OS on my EX2200 to get the full capabilities of IEEE 802.at POE?

I'm currently on JUNOS Base OS boot [10.1R1.8]

Based on the EX2200 hardware documentation and Junos release notes, IEEE 802.3at (POE+) for EX2200-24P/EX2200-48P requires Junos Release 10.3 or later.  The EX2200-C-12P-2G requires Junos Release 11.3 or later.

Please note that the maximum PoE power budget is 405W for the EX2200-24P/EX2200-48P and 100W for the EX2200-C-12P.  The maximum draw on a POE+ port can not exceed 30W.

At this time, I would respectfully suggest that an appropriate release in the EEOL 10.4 train (EX2200-24P or EX2200-48P).  If you should go this route, please be sure to have a backup of config (always a good idea), schedule downtime appropriately as the firmware and Junos software support dual-root partition upgrade takes approximately 25-35 minutes from the point of reboot.

The only times I've ever needed PoE density was for VoIP phones, and most VoIP phones, once they've booted uses 5w or less so I've never had a need for more.

Some phones like the Cisco 7970 use a lot more power, and these days with 802.11N AP's, security camera's and even *laptop's* running off PoE you can start to need more of the power, but I still find it unlikely to ever need the full power available from a switch.
