Upgrade VC-link from 40G to 100G on 4-member QFX5110

‎06-10-2020 01:28 AM

Hi,

I have a 4-member VC of QFX5110-32q up and running Junos 17.3R1.10 flex.

Right now, the VC-ports are 40G and I want to upgrade these to 100G instead.

Questions:

1. I think I cannot mix different speed for vc-ports within a single VC right ?

2. Is there a smooth way to upgrade these VC links or will I have to stop the stack anyway and interrupt traffic ?

Thanks.

Best,

G

Hi Gaetan,

Greetings,

Yes, I believe the PFE needs to be restarted after the conversion, so you would want to do this in a change-window.

Even if we create this port as VC-Port, the port will remain as down. In order to bring the 100g interface up in QFX5110-32Q, change the chassis system-mode to flexi using command below:

root@jtac-qfx5110-32q-r2023# run request chassis system-mode flexi-pic-mode
System-mode has changed. This will restart PFE. <-- changing the mode will restart the PFE

Hope this helps. Smiley Happy

Hello Gaetan,

Greetings,

Answer to your questions:

1. I think I cannot mix different speed for vc-ports within a single VC right ?

Ans: As per my understanding, you can make any revenue port as VC port which will defiently have lesser speed than the dedicated VC port. We can have different speed for VC-ports within the single VC.

user@switch> show virtual-chassis vc-port

fpc0:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------–
Interface Type Trunk Status Speed Neighbor
or ID (mbps) ID Interface
PIC / Port
vcp-0 Dedicated 1 Up           32000        1 vcp-1
vcp-1 Dedicated 2 Up           32000        0 vcp-0
1/0 Auto-Configured 3 Up           1000         2 vcp-255/1/0
1/0 Auto-Configured 3 Up           1000         2 vcp-255/1/1

2. Is there a smooth way to upgrade these VC links or will I have to stop the stack anyway and interrupt traffic ?

Ans: You need to perform the change in a safe Maintanence window as this will restart the PFE and there will be a impact. Hence, it is safe to do the changes in a MW.

root@jtac-qfx5110-32q-r2023# run request chassis system-mode flexi-pic-mode
System-mode has changed. This will restart PFE. <-- changing the mode will restart the PFE

Re: Upgrade VC-link from 40G to 100G on 4-member QFX5110

I am using switches are qfx5110-32q running Junos 17.3R1.10 flex right now.

In the documentation, I could find the following statement:

QFX5110-32Q—A 40GbE/100GbE data center access and aggregation switch, the QFX5110-32Q offers up to 32 QSFP+ ports, or 20 QSFP+ ports and four QSFP28 ports, with an aggregate throughput of 2.56 Tbps or 1.44 Bpps per switch

Does this means that if I go on and use 100G ports to build my virtual-chassis instead of 40G, then ports 20 to 27 will be disabled and unusable under any circumstances ? or does that depends on the Junos version running ?

Thanks,

Gaetan
