Upgrade path for EX4200 stack running 12.3R9.4 to 15.1R6

‎11-14-2017 08:21 AM

Hi,

I'm a bit confused on what the recommeded upgrade path for this scenario.

Do I need to upgrade to 14.x something before going all the way to 15.1R6?

Thanks!

Yes..you said it correct.

Pl refer following extract from the JUNOS upgrade path policy.

"Support for upgrades and downgrades that span more than three Junos OS releases at a time is not provided, except for releases that are designated as Extended End-of-Life (EEOL) releases. EEOL releases provide direct upgrade and downgrade paths—you can upgrade directly from one EEOL release to the next EEOL release even though EEOL releases generally occur in increments beyond three releases. You can upgrade or downgrade to the EEOL release that occurs directly before or after the currently installed EEOL release, or to two EEOL releases before or after. For example, Junos OS Releases 14.1, 14.2, 15.1 and 16.1 are EEOL releases. You can upgrade from Junos OS Release 14.1 to Release 15.1 or from Junos OS Release 15.1 to Release 16.2. However, you cannot upgrade directly from a non-EEOL release that is more than three releases ahead or behind. To upgrade or downgrade from a non-EEOL release to a release more than three releases before or after, first upgrade to the next EEOL release and then upgrade or downgrade from that EEOL release to your target release"

Hence, based on above, from 12.3R9 you may safely go 14.1 and then you may upgrade to 15.1r6.

Actually in this case you can upgrade directly from any 12.3 release to any 15.1 release.  I might suggest you remain on 12.3 for a while longer, as 15.1 has been shown to not be 100% stable with older legacy EX products, EX2200/EX3300/EX4200.

Support for 12.3 has been extended across of these products mentioned until [at least] Jan 2019.

Just FYI.

Thanks for the helpful info!  Any reason I should look at going to 14.1RX instead?.. or just stay on 12.3.

There is no reason, as no knew functionality or fixes, to even consider 14.x for the legacy EX products.  In my experience 12.3R9+ has been guite stable with these products and at this time I only recommend using 12.3 code stream with legacy EX products.  This is just my [somewhat informed] view, which is support by many within Juniper TAC as well.
