hi,

any idea why this error occurs?

Hello Arix,

please replace "encapsulation ethernet-bridge" with "encapsulation flexible-ethernet-services" or "encapsulation extended-vlan-bridge", this depends on what you need and want to have.

What is the platform / Junos version ? From the hostname, I believe this is vQFX ?

Some Broadcom devices do have limitation for service-provider style config (ethernet-bridge encap in this case ).

On my lab device :

root@5a12-qfx5# show | compare | no-more
[edit interfaces]
+ ae10 {
+ flexible-vlan-tagging;
+ encapsulation ethernet-bridge;
+ aggregated-ether-options {
+ lacp {
+ active;
+ }
+ }
+ }

{master:0}[edit]
root@5a12-qfx5# commit check

[edit interfaces]
'ae10'
ethernet encapsulation not allowed on tagged interfaces
error: configuration check-out failed

However the extended-vlan-bridge encap config you pasted worked fine for me :

root@5a12-qfx5# show | compare | no-more
[edit interfaces]
+ ae10 {
+ flexible-vlan-tagging;
+ encapsulation extended-vlan-bridge;
+ aggregated-ether-options {
+ lacp {
+ active;
+ }
+ }
+ }

{master:0}[edit]
root@5a12-qfx5# commit check
configuration check succeeds

I am checking the config on a vQFX as well on the same major release, and the extended-vlan-bridge encap works for me :

Can you default the interface, exit/enter the config mode and try to configure the ae bundle once again ?

And also, when loading this vQFX in vlab, there is no xe interfaces there, how to create multiple xe interfaces on th vQFX?

You need the "encapsulation flexible-ethernet-services" for the vlan-bridge config on non-zero unit of the ae/physical interface. This encap type is available only from 18.1R3 and 18.4R1.

To eliminate these limitations, starting with Junos OS Releases 18.1R3 and 18.4R1, QFX5100, QFX5110, QFX5200, and QFX5210 switches, and Junos on White Box support flexible Ethernet services.

Additional benefits of flexible Ethernet services support include the following:

  • Instead of configuring the following Layer 2 features only on logical interface unit number 0, you can now configure them on any logical interface unit number (unit 0 and any non-zero unit number):

    • Layer 2 bridging (family ethernet-switching)

    • Layer 2 bridging (encapsulation vlan-bridge)

    • VXLANs

  • On a physical interface, you can now configure Layer 2 bridging with family ethernet-switching on one or more logical interfaces and Layer 2 bridging with encapsulation vlan-bridge on one or more logical interfaces.

  • On a physical interface, you can now configure one or more logical interfaces with encapsulation extended-vlan-bridge and one or more logical interfaces with interface-mode trunk.

For the xe-interface, have you downloaded the pfe image ? From the command output you shared earlier FPC 0 still showed empty. You will need the PFE image as well and can refer the below link for steps to set up the vQFX :

https://www.eve-ng.net/index.php/documentation/howtos/howto-add-juniper-vqfx/

PFE download link : https://support.juniper.net/support/downloads/?p=vqfxeval#sw

Once you have the PFE image and the PFE and RE are connected over the em interface, FPC 0 will be online. After this, you can configure the xe interfaces.
