  • 1.  failure to install Jloader as a precondition for 10.4R3

    Hello team:

I want to install 10.4R3 on my EX2200, but according to the Release Notes, I have to upgrade the JLOADER first.

So I got the recommended jloader image from the Software Center, and tried the upgrade, with the following error messages:

root> request system software add jloader-ex-2200-11.3I20110326_0802_hmerge-signed.tgz

¿Has anyone got into this situation and solved the issue?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,

    From PSN-2011-03-201:

    http://www.juniper.net/alerts/viewalert.jsp?actionBtn=Search&txtAlertNumber=PSN-2011-03-201&viewMode=view

The recommended installation procedure is to install the Jloader and Junos OS images together, and then perform the installation reboot. This cuts down on installation time and prevents the harmless message listed below from being displayed.

Upgrading the Jloader image after the Junos OS image installation may result in the message, "At least one package installed on this device has limited support.", being displayed when user logs into system. This is a harmless message that is displayed if the Jloader image is installed after the Junos OS image.

BTW, what JUNOS version are you upgrading from? Direct upgrade to 10.4 is supported from EEOL versions or no more than 3 releases apart, i.e. from 10.1->10.4 is supported.

    Hi Alex:

I am trying to upgrade from 10.2R1.8 to 10.4R3. ¿Do you mean I could do it without upgrading the jloader first?  This is interesting, since the Release Notes documentation is very explicit about the need to upgrade the jloader.

Regarding your other comment, I actually am not able to install both packages (jloader plus JUNOS) together, since the jloader installation fails.

Last but not least: this problem did not arise on EX4200 platforms. Only on EX2200 ones.

Looking to hear from you soon.

    regards, Rogelio

    Hi Alex:

    It worked!

I skipped jloader installation, and proceeded directly to JUNOS upgrade. No problem.

Just to see what happened, after the successful installation of JUNOS, I tried the upgrade of jloader, and worked too!

So just in case, I installed JUNOS over again 🐵

Thank you very much for your help.

    regards, Rogelio

On the EX4200, I tried loading jloader in JUNOS 10.4R1.9 and it failed.  I upgraded to JUNOS 10.4R3.4 without a problem.  I tried loading jloader again and it failed.  The switch appears to run fine without the jloader.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong and what the long term impact of not running the jloader successfully.

You will be unable to upgrade to a later release (12.1 for example) before upgrading the Bootloader. Fabian.
