irb interface dhcp periodically stops being reachable

Currently we are experiencing issues with our Juniper EX2300-C where the irb interface is set for DHCP.  Every day we cannot ping that device periodically throughout the day.  Has anyone else had this issue and can point me in the right direction?  This only happens with the EX2300's.

 

JUNOS 18.2R2.6 is the version we are running.

Hi Tonakobe,

 

Do you see any link flap on the EX? Could you please check using interface extensive command?

 

Also, is there any High CPU related events? While pinging, monitor the interface and check whether the packets are receiving or not.

No flapping.  I am unable to monitor the interface during the issue because I can't reach the device.  It seems that it only last a minute or two then it comes back.

Is there a specific reason you are running DHCP client on this switch?  Not saying it should not work properly, but this is not "normally" what is done with switches and routers.  Usually they are hard coded with an IP in the "management" VLAN.  Might you be able to assign an IP instead of using DHCP Client and see what the results are?

 

Now it could be that the switch CPU/RE is just over burdened.  How often are you pinging the switch (I assume as a test) such that you know it is not responding?

Sorry the late reply.  We are using DHCP because we deploy several a week and this helps with administrative overhead.  Our technicians can just go install them at customers premise and our NOC can configure them remotely.  Using DHCP saves a ton of time then pre-configuring every single one with a static IP.  I just had another one today.  Our NMS shows it as down.  It does not respond to pings for about 5 minutes and then it comes back up.

Hi,

 

  The interface may be unable to renew its IP on time, as you have no other access to the switch during the issue try something like this:

 

show interfaces irb.1 terse | refresh 40 | append /var/tmp/MyOutput.txt

 

 It will run  "show interfaces irb.1 terse" every 40sec and save it under /var/tmp/MyOutput.txt.

 

Once you have connection reestablished, you can analyze what happened:

 

file show /var/tmp/MyOutput.txt

So after I run that command - if I log out of the switch it will stop appending to the output.txt file?  How taxing is this on the CPU?

You may need to keep a session open possibly using root credentials via console for the command to work. If this is not an option, you could try configuring event options to respond to the communication loss from the switch and then collect some outputs.
