I had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion about 5G Networks and Backhaul at TIA 2014 conference in Dallas. The panel had a well-rounded participation from vendors addressing different parts of mobile networks. As expected there were no violent agreements on this topic, rather it was reaffirmation of a comment made at a session in ITU on the topic of 5G that “5G is like a big elephant in the room where everyone is seeing the different parts of it”.

5G Networks and Backhaul

by Juniper Employee ‎06-02-2014 09:48 AM - edited ‎07-11-2014 02:00 PM

We are in the midst of major 4G rollouts and more than half of the world population have not even tasted the supersonic LTE networks, yet we see a lot of industry talks on the topic of 5G networks. So let us shine our crystal balls and see what 5G networks are all about all the while addressing some of the burning questions related to this topic.

Celebrations, lists and predictions are all to be indulged in as we approach the festivities and a new year. I’m no exception so here are a few of my predictions for the world of LTE as we go into 2014.

I contend that MSPs, consumers and third party services providers such as banks take mobile network security for granted. I really don’t think any segment has fully thought through the implications for them, their brand, their ability to win new business, or the safety of personal information and all that implies. A new white paper by the Juniper team takes a look at some of the underlying causes and effect. My blog calls out some of the highlights and also gives you a link to download the white paper.

LTE Security as Mobile Operators Transition to All-IP Networks

by Juniper Employee ‎11-07-2013 12:45 AM - edited ‎11-07-2013 01:49 AM

There really is more to life than SDN and NFV. Although you’d be hard pushed to discover what it might be if you go by the headlines in journals and key speakerships at conferences. If you live in the world of a mobile operator you might contend that LTE Networks are the next big thing. But LTE is not without its challenges and in this blog I review an eighteen minute presentation by Paul Gainham, Senior Director Service Provider Marketing EMEA. You can also follow a link to view a recording of his presentation.

The Danger Of Assumptions

by Juniper Employee ‎09-24-2013 03:08 AM - edited ‎09-24-2013 09:56 AM

The recent security attacks on 2 UK banks where criminals were able to pose at IT technicians and literally walk into the banks and install Keyboard and Video monitoring equipment reminds us that the security threat faced by organisations can often be as physical as it is virtual.

Clearly in both cases, bank staff assumed they were legitimate technicians and gave them full access to the desktop PC’s allowing the criminals to install equipment that allowed them to remotely access and transfer account funds.

The lesson to be learned from this is that the only assumption that should ever be made in security planning and thinking is to assume everything is un-trusted unless proven otherwise.

Five reasons why EU should regulate mobile security

by Juniper Employee ‎09-23-2013 06:29 AM - edited ‎10-25-2013 12:21 AM

In an attempt to protect the users against dominant positions, EU has shocked the telecommunication market with some new initiatives. During the last months we've seen the European Union making steps towards the end of mobile roaming fees within the EU territory. We've seen as well EU, making steps towards defining a Net Neutrality model to avoid operators being able to block OTT traffic. Should EU now be looking at Mobile Security?

Will LTE Security Separate the Coke from the 4G Can?

by Juniper Employee ‎09-12-2013 05:34 AM - edited ‎10-31-2013 05:22 AM

There are many things we take for granted these days; mobile networks for instance. It’s a long time since I’ve heard a discussion about the merits of one operator over another. Many people feel operators are vanilla and the real flavour is in the content they experience. But LTE will change that in a surprising way. Operators’ attitudes to LTE Security differ in an alarming way and will influence many people’s buying decisions. Read on to discover what a new paper from Heavy Reading reveals about these attitudes and the approaches adopted by many operators.

LTE-A stands for LTE Africa

by Juniper Employee ‎07-12-2013 07:10 AM - edited ‎07-12-2013 07:14 AM

Just a few days after LTE World Summit in Amsterdam, this week, I've been attending the LTE Africa event in Cape Town, July 9-10. One might think LTE is the same thing wherever you go, however I can now say the two events were very different, according to the sessions I attended and the conversations I had (...)

Not the end, just the beginning...

by Juniper Employee on ‎02-28-2013 03:12 AM

As customers, partners and colleagues return home, dispersing across the globe I reflect on a busy week at Mobile World Congress. This is the biggest event in the global calendar for the mobile industry and one of the highlights for me was Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission’s Digital Agenda, speaking this week to announce a Mobile Action Plan for Europe. The UK has just completed its 4G spectrum license sale and discussions are already underway about 5G across Europe...
