Celebrations, lists and predictions are all to be indulged in as we approach the festivities and a new year. I’m no exception so here are a few of my predictions for the world of LTE as we go into 2014.

Bo Diddley and the LTE Security Debate – Who Do You Trust?

by Juniper Employee ‎10-31-2013 04:03 AM - edited ‎10-31-2013 05:46 AM

LTE offers mobile operators a chance to fight back against the “cost-per-bit” culture that has come to dominate a market with falling ARPU. But Patrick Donegan, writing in a paper by Heavy Reading, feels there will be a close correlation between financial performance and the adoption of end-to-end IP Security. Why then, do many operators find it an acceptable risk not to adopt end-to-end IPSec?

By 2016 over half the forecast 2,500,000 LTE cell sites will be without IPSecurity says a new white paper by Heavy Reading.

“The days of planning via Erlangs are dead.” So said Juniper Networks’ Steve Shaw in a recent webinar. Unpredictable growth and unpredictable real time demand require new thinking in mobile network planning. Steve was joined by Humair Raza who, acknowledging you cannot build a business on cost savings alone, was keen to demonstrate new ways of turning the network into a platform for revenue growth. Between them, they make a compelling case for revising how we think about mobile backhaul networks.

Will LTE Security Separate the Coke from the 4G Can?

There are many things we take for granted these days; mobile networks for instance. It’s a long time since I’ve heard a discussion about the merits of one operator over another. Many people feel operators are vanilla and the real flavour is in the content they experience. But LTE will change that in a surprising way. Operators’ attitudes to LTE Security differ in an alarming way and will influence many people’s buying decisions. Read on to discover what a new paper from Heavy Reading reveals about these attitudes and the approaches adopted by many operators.

If we are serious about the “end-to-end” mobile customer experience then deploying LTE without future-proofing the core, backhaul and security will lead to problems later. In a recent Buyer Case Study, IDC do a great job of highlighting some of the challenges faced by mobile operators as they move to all-IP networks. They also take us through how one operator managed this transition. I touch on some of the key points in this blog but I also point you to where you can download the IDC paper for free.

Ask any citizen of a country that has been through a currency change and my guess is that the initial fear, scepticism and doubt was, in time,  replaced with an acceptance that the change was ultimately beneficial when considering the bigger picture.  Of course some will retain an emotional attachment to the ways of old but often progress and emotion are not easy bed fellows.
