Using the lost art of pricing to fight back against OTT

by Juniper Employee ‎03-13-2014 07:19 AM - edited ‎03-13-2014 08:42 AM

The downwards pressure on service providers margins and the challenges they face from over the top (OTT) players getting a ‘free ride’ on their networks are well discussed within the industry. Much of the discussion focuses around how service providers can deliver new services or take the OTT players head on. However, they may be ignoring one traditional tool in their arsenal – price discrimination.

Price discrimination: “the action of selling the same product at different prices to different buyers, in order to maximize sales and profits”

In the old voice dominated world service providers still saw ‘OTT services’ delivering high value, yet they managed to extract value with price discrimination. For example, businesses relied upon voice communications to work remotely and close deals. How did service providers extract additional value from here? They did it by charging more during business hours, and even more for international phone calls (even after the international network costs). They still do this for roaming with mobile services – at least for now until the European Commission have finished abolishing them.

Happy Birthday, World Wide Web

by Juniper Employee on ‎03-12-2014 03:52 PM

It’s amazing to think that the Web turned 25 today. The speed of innovation has accelerated so much in just the last decade that one could say it has evolved from the diaper rashes, wild tantrums and hormonal mood swings, and is finally ready to move out of its parents’ basement to find a “real job.”

The question on top of my mind is whether the Web’s “online profile” deserves a serious look by the prospective employers.

I'm blogging live from Broadband World Forum where there is a lot going on. What's catching my interest this year is a sense of renewed optimism by network operators that the network has the potential to become an intelligent asset and this gives rise to new service and revenue opportunities. I dropped into one panel session that tackled this head on and my take-aways are below.
