5G Networks and Backhaul

by Juniper Employee ‎06-02-2014 09:48 AM - edited ‎07-11-2014 02:00 PM

We are in the midst of major 4G rollouts and more than half of the world population have not even tasted the supersonic LTE networks, yet we see a lot of industry talks on the topic of 5G networks. So let us shine our crystal balls and see what 5G networks are all about all the while addressing some of the burning questions related to this topic.

Having previously foiled the dark plot of the “Empire”, let us look at what the Jedi knights at Ericsson are up to these days. They deserve the title of Jedi as for last 20+ years they have been busy keeping the order in our mobile galaxy by fighting at forefront against the evil plots of the “Empire” and other separatists.

Their recent innovation, the indoor small cell system, named “Dot”, has seen mixed reaction from friends and foes. Even though the architecture can be called the classical closed system from the radio heads, it looks way better than the “Hyper Dense HetNet” proposed by the Imperial army generals, I mean visionaries.

The Empire Strikes Back ... with “Hyper Dense HetNet”

Continuing on the saga of mobile architecture wars, the first stop on our journey is to get some peak on QCOM’s activities. It is befitting to give them the title of “The Empire” as they spent the good part of the last decade acting as patent bullies collecting royalties from their CDMA arsenal. After the global adoption of LTE as the standard for evolving both 3GPP and 3GPP2 based RAN, the CDMA gravy train has come to a screeching halt, so they have shifted their focus lately on selling real stuff Smiley Happy However, they need to sell a lot more of these tiny processors to continue their growth profile. Recently they have been pitching the “1000x data challenge” in various industry events. Guess what, who is going to benefit from this vision, of course “The Empire”.

You may ask what do mobile architecture wars have to do with the “Star Wars”? The reason is simple, these architectures will have repercussion of epic proportions on mobile networks, so much so that even George Lucas could not have fathomed them when he conceived his super hit series. Following in his footsteps through a series of blogs I will try to analyze how mobile network architecture is being influenced by a number of (apparently) good and (apparently) dark forces to promote their agenda in this highly competitive marketplace.

The Elephant in the RAN

Trust.

Subjective, emotional, personal yet crucial that it exists for inter-personal or business to business transactions to be conducted on an ongoing basis.

The first curious thing about trust is that in many ways it is not a monetarily expensive thing to establish. It is built on the emotional pillars of integrity, authenticity, and transparency.  Those pillars can and often do take time to establish but once established they provide a strong foundation for that ongoing transactional engagement.

Ask any citizen of a country that has been through a currency change and my guess is that the initial fear, scepticism and doubt was, in time,  replaced with an acceptance that the change was ultimately beneficial when considering the bigger picture.  Of course some will retain an emotional attachment to the ways of old but often progress and emotion are not easy bed fellows.
