    hi
i was running Junos 11.1R1.1 on my SRX-240, it crashed and Junos was loaded from boot image as shown in warinig, hence loaded Junos 10.0R3.1.. Now i m trying to upgrade to Junos-10.4R4.5, but it gives following error and terminates..

..(i hav done system storage cleanup aswell to kill space issue, if at all )

root@srx240# run request system software add /var/tmp/junos-srxsme-10.4R4.5-domestic.tgz no-validate
    Formatting alternate root (/dev/da0s2a)...
newfs: /dev/da0s2a: failed to open disk for writing
ERROR: Could not format alternate root

root@srx240# run request system software add /var/tmp/junos-srxsme-10.4R4.5-domestic.tgz
    NOTICE: Validating configuration against junos-srxsme-10.4R4.5-domestic.tgz.
NOTICE: Use the 'no-validate' option to skip this if desired.
    Formatting alternate root (/dev/da0s2a)...
newfs: /dev/da0s2a: failed to open disk for writing
ERROR: Could not format alternate root

i have tried it bothways, without and with no-validate....as shown above, but same error

Whats the issue??Has my firewall developed some fault???What to do???
    Please guide......

Junos 10.4R2 (EX) and 10.1 (SRX) and beyond use a different boot layout.

    See http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos10.1/information-products/topic-collections/release-notes/10.1/topic-42304.html

Once the disk layout is changed to dual-root you will need to stay north of Junos 10.1 on your device or go through some contortions to get back to pre dual-root format on the device memory card.

Basically the format of your SRX disk does not match the expectations of your pre-dual root 10.0R3.1 Junos installation package.

    hi Natek...
the document u have refered has been very helpful..i have just one little query....
the document says firewalls factory configured with 10.1 or later are dual partitioned, while those configured with 9.6 or earlier are single partioned..
i have got firewall with 10.0R3.1(i.e in between), what about this one????
sigle or dual partitioned????how to check it out from cli????
    plz guide......

That would be single partition (10.0R3).

    http://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB17366&cat=JUNOS&actp=LIST

talks about how to tell if your SRX is dual partition.

The article says that the console will show the following during boot of the device if dual root is active:

Boot media /dev/da0 has dual root support

You can run the the following from the CLI to see if you have dual root partition:

root> show system snapshot media internal
Information for snapshot on       internal (/dev/da0s1a) (backup)
    Creation date: Mar 18 10:03:44 2010
    JUNOS version on snapshot:
      junos  : 10.0R3.1-export
Information for snapshot on       internal (/dev/da0s2a) (primary)
    Creation date: Mar 25 10:04:42 2010
    JUNOS version on snapshot:
      junos  : 10.0R3.2-export

A system without dual root partition will show something like this with the same command:

root> show system snapshot media internal
Information for snapshot on internal (da0s1)
    Creation date: Mar 25 10:04:42 2010
    JUNOS version on snapshot:
      junos  : 10.0R3.2-export
