  • 1.  JUNOS Documentation - I'm lost - How do you find stuff?

    Hello,

    I see tons of documentation on Juniper's website, but I can't seem to figure out a reliable way to find exactly what I'm looking for.

    I'm used to the way Vendor C does things.... where you have a clear "configuration guide" and "command reference guide" for most subjects.  Yes, there are a lot of "tech notes" and stuff, but the first 2 guides are what I mostly am interested in.

    Suppose, I want to know about the Juniper "copy-tos-to-outer-ip-header" option for GRE tunnels in JUNOS.  Currently, I just google it or go to http://www.juniper.net/ExternalSearch/search?locale=us_en and cross my fingers.  In this case I found it in the "network interface config guide" for 11.1.

    What's the official way to find this info.  Suppose I'm running 10.4 and want to know the exact behavior of this command, when it was introduced and the default behavior of it in 10.4.

    I'm looking for more of a "teach me how to fish" instead of "give me a fish".  How does everyone find the documentation they're looking for (without relying on searches and crossing your fingers)??  Smiley Wink

    Option 1.  Support -> Technical Documentation  ??

    Option 2.  Support -> Download Software -> JunOS Canada & US -> 10.4 -> Documentation -> Junos Software Documentation ???

    Both of these lead me down a rabbit hole where I get lost.

    Thanks!

    Hello Julio,
    Of course everyone has his style of "fishing" and each fishing zone is different from the others 🙂
    So I think that by using the Juniper website for a while you will feel more confident and will take few time to find things...
    Anyway, in the tech documentation section you just have to choose the product and its sw version and you will find all the documents,as an example, you will get to this page: http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos11.2/information-products/pathway-pages/product/m-t-mx/11.2/index.html

    Scrolling down this page, in the "Reference" section, there are the links to command reference guides,
    configuration mode commands:
    http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos11.2/information-products/pathway-pages/reference-hierarchy/junos-configuration-hierarchies.html
    and operational mode commands:
    http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos11.2/information-products/pathway-pages/CmdRef/swcmdRef.html#protocols

    Also, when you get to the documentation page of a command related to, for instance, version 11.1 of junos, try to edit the URL changing the release version number, you should be able to find the documentation for the other release!

    I think that you took the right action, Julio:  searching on google or on the new Juniper search engine should get you the answers you seek, in general.  (The "new" Juniper search engine---which was launched in June of 2011---is a marked improvement over the old one!).

    The Information Experience (aka, techpubs) organization has a new application that we'll be launching in the second half of the year that will be a quick reference application for operational commands and configuration statements.  Once it's available, it should address your specific use case above.  If you or other folks would like to participate in the beta testing when it becomes available, please let me know, and I'll ask the project manager for that application to include you in the beta.
