  • 1.  Juniper MX 480 SW upgrade from 15.1 to 17.4

    Posted 10-03-2019 20:13

    Hello Community
I am trying to upgrade Juniper MX 480 from 15.1F7.3 to 17.4R2.4. I am getting following errors when i perform an upgrade.

    Checking PIC combinations
    Checking vmhost version compatibility
VMHost version too old for Junos
    ERROR: package junos-x86-64-17.4R2.4 fails requirements
    ERROR: Failed to add junos-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2.4.tgz

DO i need to upgrade in steps ? or i can take such a big leap.

Here is hardware inventory as well

You need a vmhost image buddy. It seems that you have a next generation RE, which runs on a VMhost package.

I have junos-vmhost-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2-S6.tgz as well as junos-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2.4.tgz* in /var/tmp/installation-package/ directory.

When i perform junos-vmhost-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2-S6.tgz , i am getting following error

    mgd: error: configuration check-out failed
    Validation failed
    /usr/libexec/ui/validate-config.sh: op_fix_config: not found

appears your upgrade with the current configuration is causing problems. Try the upgrade with no-validate keyword.

I have used the followingcommand to install vm software

request vmhost software add /var/tmp/installation-package/junos-vmhost-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2-S6.tgz reboot

no validate option worked and after that i received following message
A REBOOT IS REQUIRED TO LOAD THIS SOFTWARE CORRECTLY.
Use the 'request vmhost reboot' command to reboot the system.

I did perform the reboot but i do not see my software directory any more.

Also i compared output from router where i have performed the upgrade the outpput is same of "show vm version"

from router with no vm upgrade

    yes upgrade was successful.

i had this directory prior to reboot
    file list /var/tmp/installation-package/

then i guess it is pretty much expected, since it was in your tmp folder and a reboot was done.

    Hi Sushil,

/var/tmp contents  will be removed after upgrade. This is expected behaviour.

Please check show version, I think your box is already upgraded.  This upgrade installs the host image along with the compatible Junos OS.

Can you please share logs after you added software using 'request vmhost software add' and rebooted?

You can copy the tgz file  to box and try again. The upgrade should work.

unfortuantely did not save the logs 😞 I wil lhave to request my cutsomer to add the software again. I will attempt  software upgrade as soon as i have the SW.
Meantime i have other node (primary ) which also needs SW upgrade. Its also giving me same error "vmhost os too old".

So i guess here also i need to upgrade vm first > reboot > then upgrade .
or i can attemp vmhost software upgrade & then upgrade with native sw and then perform reboot at end

i have  performed software upgrade after upgrading vm os  but it failed again with same message.

    Checking vmhost version compatibility
VMHost version too old for Junos
    ERROR: package junos-x86-64-17.4R2.4 fails requirements
    ERROR: Failed to add junos-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2.4.tgz

I will again perform vm os upgrade and will share the logs.

P.S - This is native router and i had performed vm os software upgrade but looks like it did not went through.

    Hi,

Just noticed you were using "junos-vmhost-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2-S6.tgz" or "junos-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2.4.tgz"

Can you please use Main Release once:

    "junos-vmhost-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2.4.tgz"

    Instead of Service Release :

    "junos-vmhost-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2-S6.tgz"

    "junos-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2.4.tgz"

    For instance:

    • "request vmhost software add /var/tmp/junos-vmhost-install-mx-x86-64-17.4R2.4.tgz re0 no-validate"

This upgrade installs the host image along with the compatible Junos OS.

If you have important files in directories other than /config and /var, copy the files to a secure location before upgrading the device. The files under /config and /var (except /var/etc) are preserved after the VM host upgrade.

You can use /var/preserve/ folder to dump image files, I guess you should be able to get the image from this path after upgrade also

    Thank you

    Hi Sushil,

As you have you have NGRE RE-S-2X00x6 in chassis, In order to perform VM Host upgrade for this type of RE , use the "junos-vmhost-install-x.tgz image". This upgrade installs the host image along with the compatible Junos OS.
The jinstall package will work for the other types of REs.

    Thanks and Regards,

Looks like you're using NG-RE model which requries VM HOST upgrade.

Upgrade to VMhost version first, then the Junos.

Follow the instructions to upgrade VMhost:

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/concept/installation_upgrade.html
