    Hello hendranata,

15.1X53 is End of Support since 12/05/2018, this means you are running a not supported JUNOS release anymore. This is important if you have a Service Contract, as Juniper supports only releases which are in service. Additionally, EOL releases do not get any security fixes anymore. You can find the EOL dates of JUNOS releases here:

    https://support.juniper.net/support/eol/software/junos/#gsc.tab=0

Here you can see the features which have been introduced since 15.1X53-D591:

    https://apps.juniper.net/feature-explorer/compare-softwares.html?swName=Junos+OS#bm=cmpsw&pl=EX2300&rel1=18.3R3&rel2=15.1X53D591&sw1=Junos%20OS&sw2=Junos%20OS

In general, newer JUNOS releases provide more features, security fixes and hopefully more stability.

As you are new to the Juniper Support forum, please click on "Accepted Solution" if this answers your questions. Kudos are appreciated as well.

    Hi hendranata,

From our recommended versions list for EX2300, both seem to have been recommended. It would very much depend on your requirements. Before suggesting any version, it is important to understand if those fit in for us.

    EX2300 Junos 15.1X53-D591 / 18.2R3-S2

JTAC recommend that version.. meanwhile we know that there is new version 20.1

so do u think using 20.1 is better than 18.2R3-S2 ? still not sure why JTAC does not recommended the lateast version..

Please note that the newest version is always the most unstable version as well. You can see the (theoretical) stability on the "R" and "S" letters behind the number. "R" means "Maintenance release", "S" means "Service release". There are only two maintenance releases published, R2 and R3. There is no limitation of "S" releases which can be published. For stability reasons, I would not recommend anyone using a release lower than "R3". And a "R3-S2" is better than a "R3", because it means Juniper has published two bugfixing releases for "R3", which provides more stability to this major JunOS release.

I have a few 2300's too, and I also try to keep them on the JTAC recommended version.

However, whenever possible, I go for the latest of the two recommendations.

If you are updating from 15 to 18, just remember to check the upgrade path.

so what is the stable version of junos actually for ex2300?

15.1X53-D591 or 18.2R3-S2  according to JTAC recommendation??

    Hi Hendranata

It is always better to be on the latest release as mentioned in the other posts here. However if you have a choice to upgrade to 15.x , 18.x and 20.x then i would recommend to go for 18.x. The reason for this is that 20x is still a relatively newer version and might not be in production on many customers however 18.x being comparitively older release would be proven stable and it is better than 15.x as it will have comparitively better bug fixes and security features.

    Hope this helps

i can see JTAC recommend verison: 18.2R3-S2

meanwhile i can see there is newest version 18.2R3-S4

i believe more bugs already fixed.. so using18.2R3-S4 is better right?

also if we already using 15.1X53, how do we upgrade to 18.2R3-S4 ? just simply download image of 18.2R3-S4 and add package for installation ? or do we need to update multiple packages? thanks

Correct, 18.2R3-S4 is better than 18.2R3-S2. As you can see, this was updated on "3 Dec 2019", so this recommendation is already more than half a year old.

You can upgrade directly from 15.1X53 to 18.2, no need for multiple upgrade steps.

according to the article. "Last Updated: 05 Jun 2020"

so by that time.. JTAC still recommend using 18.2R3-S2 (not 18.2R3-S4)..

    not sure why..

also any difference syntax between 15.1X53 and 18.2 ?

18.2R3-S3 and 18.2R3-S4 were released in April 2020, so in January only S2 was available.

Syntax does not change between JUNOS releases. In theory it is possible that some commands are deprecated. I'm always suggesting setting up a new device in the lab with the new JUNOS release to check if the config is compatible, to avoid surprises during the upgrade.

during the upgrade from 15.1X53 to 18.2R3 S2

    there is option called validate..

does the command will validate the old configuration whether fit in the new version of junos or what?

if some syntax that already used are deprecated, do they show the warrning or anything during the upgrade progress?

    bonjour Hendranata,

I uown and use  2300-C (the 12 ports mini version)

to make a long story short, I stick to the recommeded 18.2R3S2 if  only because it fix the infamous PR1442376 that caused my switches to lose remote access randomly - problem disappeared as soon as I installed it. No way I will install anything on my 2300-C that will not include PR1442376 flagged as "fixed" in the documentation.  I have been told by JTAC that the followup 18.2R3S3  also include a fix for PR1477096 (swizzle rebooot). so I may upgrade to it when the time comes
