    HI

    a bit confusing about NTP server setting:

    [edit system ntp]

    user@host# show

    boot-server 10.210.14.173;

    server 10.210.14.172;

    user@host>set date ntp 10.210.14.172

    both of them set their mode set ntp server.

    so what is the difference ?

    Hi,

    [edit system ntp]

    user@host# show

    boot-server 10.210.14.173;

    server 10.210.14.172;

    The above configs are done when you bring up the router, which helps the router to get time sync from the NTP servers.

    However there can be situations, wherein the NTP servers will not be synchronized with routers or the offset is morethan 128 secs. In these cases, in order to restore the time sync without a reboot you will use "set date ntp <server>"

    Thx Surya,

    I got that now. however, i have another wondering that i just want to make sure. it's about the time interval to synchronize. if the time difference between the local device's clock and the NTP server's clock is more than 128 milliseconds, the clocks are slowly stepped into the synchronization. however, if the difference is more than 1000 seconds, the clocks are not synchronized. this mean that 128 milliseconds <= clock_Syn<1000 seconds ? or the word " more than" that they used indicate that " faster" or "shorter" than ? confusing !

    Hi Sam,

    Basically for NTP server and router to get in sync, the two system clocks should be off by atleast 128 milisec. But not more than 128sec. So when we say "off" either system can be faster or slower.
