Upgrading JUNOS on J-2350

[ Edited ]

Hi, folks:

Im totally new to Junipers, so please be patient with me.

I need to upgrade the OS on a J-series router and I dont know what the procedure is.

Like Cisco, I imagine you have to check the memory capabilities of the router to make sure you have enough room to download and install the new image. Then, I guess, you have to select where the OS should be stored. Etc...

Can someone kindly give me a step-by-step procedure (including the commands to execute) to successfuly upgrade my J-series router?

I do have the new version of code on my laptop and I do have an ftp program running. Right now I am running 9.4R1.8, and I want to upgrade to junos-jsr-9.5R2.7-domestic

Take note, Im not new to networking, just new to Juniper.

Thanks

Victor

Hi,

as you already using 9.4 memory should be enough to install 9.5. Here are the steps to upgrade:

1) Copy the new image to your J-series (e.g. with WinSCP) under /var/tmp/. In order to be able to do that you should allow either SSH or FTP services:

set system services ssh

set system services ftp (in case you want to use FTP)

2)  run request system software add /var/tmp/image-name reboot

If this worked for you please flag my post as an "Accepted Solution" so others can benefit. A kudo would be cool if you think I earned it.

Add-on: if you configure new services (like SSH or FTP) do not forget to commit before proceeding with step 2.

Kind Regards

Thanks, Mike, but can you be more specific?

I would like to know the commands to check memory, even if you think the router probably has enough. I need to know how to do it.

Can you be more detailed in your answer, with some explanations/narrative?

Thank you very much.

Hi,

no problem. Here we go:

1) How to check available memory:

root@J6350-081-111# run show system storage
Filesystem              Size       Used      Avail  Capacity   Mounted on
/dev/ad0s1a             742M       474M       260M       65%  /     <----- That is Compact Flash (see next command)

devfs                   1.0K       1.0K         0B      100%  /dev
devfs                   1.0K       1.0K         0B      100%  /dev/
/dev/md0                321M       321M         0B      100%  /junos
/cf                     742M       474M       260M       65%  /junos/cf

devfs                   1.0K       1.0K         0B      100%  /jail/dev

2) How to check the size of compact flash and installed hardware (ad0 is Compact Flash, in this example it is 1 GB large)

root@J6350-081-111# run show chassis hardware detail
Hardware inventory:

Power Supply 0

 3) How to show DRAM size (on Routing Engine) and DRAM utilization

root@J6350-081-111# run show chassis routing-engine
Routing Engine status:
    Temperature                 24 degrees C / 75 degrees F
    CPU temperature             44 degrees C / 111 degrees F

Thats much better, thanks.

How can I view the files that are actually in the compact flash?

Is compact flash an external card that plugs into the chassis?

Is there an nboard flash?

Which are the specific file systems/memory areas I need to check before downloading and installing a new OS?

9.5R is a 118 MB file, and this is the output of the storage command:

root@NC-CLTW1-JUN-NS1> show system storage

Doesnt look like I have enough FLASH, right?

Thanks again!

I gave a Kudos to your last post, by the way...

Re: Upgrading JUNOS on J-2350

You are welcome!

 1) How can I view the files that are actually in the compact flash?

root@J6350-081-111# run file list /mfs/ detail

/mfs/:
total 28
drwxrwxr-x  2 root  wheel        512 May 7  10:03 .snap/
drwxrwxrwT  3 root  wheel        512 Aug 17 13:24 tmp/
drwxr-xr-x  27 root wheel        512 May 7  10:03 var/

You still have enough space in /mfs/tmp (144 MB). So put your image in this directory.

2) How can I clean memory space

root@J6350-081-111# run request system storage cleanup

List of files to delete:

         Size Date         Name
    11B Jun 10 15:47 /cf/var/jail/tmp/alarmd.ts
  73.0K Dec 13  2008 /cf/var/log/autod.0.gz
  73.4K Dec 12  2008 /cf/var/log/autod.1.gz
  56.3K Dec 12  2008 /cf/var/log/dcd.0.gz
  59.7K Aug  5 13:00 /cf/var/log/default-log-messages.0.gz
  58.7K Jul 31 02:00 /cf/var/log/default-log-messages.1.gz

Delete these files ? [yes,no] (no)

To free even more memory you can also use following command:

root@J6350-081-111# run request system software delete-backup

IMPORTANT: No software rollback would be possible after this step!

Kind Regards
Michael Pergament

Compact Flash is onboard flash.

Also, you don't have to pre-download image to the compact flash, upgrading JUNOS from FTP server is supported:

request system software add ftp://FTP_server_IP/path-to-junos-image unlink

AFAIK, FTP server has to allow anonymous access. "unlink" is useful if there is little room left in CF

"The unlink option removes the package at the earliest opportunity so that the router has enough room to complete the installation"

Hello !

Today it is necessary to partner with Juniper to have the release to license. Need to open  one called and pass a series of bureaucracies.
