Strategy of snmp for the enterprise level

‎08-15-2019 11:22 PM

Hi all,

As you know that Junos supports all snmp versions (v1, v2c, v3)... And it is very easy to configure. No problem...

But I like to ask about the following things to reach the high optimum level....

1-) What is highly recommended on version of SNMP for the enterprise-level network infrasturucture(active-passive datacentre and aws and 450 remote sites)? And why?

2-) what strategy of SNMP should be taken for a robust and consistently good in quality and performance?

3-) The entreprise-sized network infrastructure consists of SRX, MX, EX, QFX devices from start to high end series. Of course some of them are very key component of network infrastructure. Why must a SNMP configruation be same to all network devices(SRX, MX, EX, QFX)? Tracking core network devices are not the same critical level of very edge devices such as ex2200/240srx: 5800SRX and 9200EX etc...

4-) which  is 3th party SNMP (NMS) should be undertaken? And what reasons?

I appreciate your ideas and experiences...

look forward to seeing your replies...

This is not exactly a device or Junos issue but rather will be driven by the monitoring platforms and strategy choosen by the operations group.  The reason Junos supports all the standards and options is to accomadate those outside choices.

As a general rule you want to minimize the number and variations in the snmp pollers you deploy in order to reduce the load on the devices responding to the polling / sending the traps.  But at the end of the day the architecture and options are selected by the choosen monitoring platform and not the Junos devices.
