Back Up Routing Engine is initiating ftp sessions to save the configuration on server

‎09-21-2016 11:56 PM

I am seeing some messages in the logs which shows that back up routing engine is initiating ftp session to save the configuration to back up server. We have configured the junos to archive the config on some server.

Here is the log message :-

But if see that status of routing engines it shows that RE0 is the master:-

Please tell is it normal behaviour ? On other MX I am not seeing this message. What is the reason behind this and how we can fix it ?

Thanks

Hi,

please share below output from both routing-engine

"show system configuration archival   "

Hi,

We met the same problem, Master RE and Backup RE send the files to an FTP server (1 file from Master RE, 1 file from Backup RE). I wonder that this is a function as the design of MX960 or not? Please give me a document about this!

Thanks!

This is an expected behaviour. Backup RE (RE1) 's configuration will be in synchronization with that if the Master RE (RE0). Upon commit on master RE, it will transfer/ push the configuration changes to the ftp server. At the same time, instance RE1(backup) tried to do the same and fails beacuse it doesnt route to.

Hi Nabil ,

Please share below output from both Routing engine to check what is configured as ftp url .Are you able ping 10.10.100.20 from back up RE ?

Thanks bmanvita,

it seems the designed behavior. This solution may be helpful:

set groups re0 interfaces fxp0 unit 0 family inet address xxxx master-only

set groups re1 interfaces fxp0 unit 0 family inet address xxxx master-only

But in case the customer wants to manage the backup RE through the fxp0 interface, we can not use these command anymore! If we add the other address into re1 interface fxp0, the problem comes back!

So, Is there an orther way to prevent backup RE to send file to the FTP server?

Thanks for any idea !

Hi,

There is no configuration statement to prevent configuration from backup RE being tranferrred as well when the system is configured for configuration archival. The use of master-only knob in the previous post was mentioned, it can be used in addition to the RE-specific MGMT interface IP address as follows -

set groups re0 system host-name ###-re0
set groups re0 interfaces fxp0 unit 0 family inet address 10.85.173.152/25
set groups re0 interfaces fxp0 unit 0 family inet address 10.85.173.154/25 master-only
set groups re1 system host-name ###-re1
set groups re1 interfaces fxp0 unit 0 family inet address 10.85.173.153/25
set groups re1 interfaces fxp0 unit 0 family inet address 10.85.173.154/25 master-only

With this archival configuration in place and "commit synchronize" active, config files from both routing engines will be transferred to the target, and there is no method to prevent that -

>> Archival Config
set system archival configuration transfer-on-commit
set system archival configuration archive-sites "ftp://root@#########://var/tmp/####/" password "$9$H.fQ/CuEclFnclKMN-Hqm"

>> On Target, both RE0 and RE1 configuration files are transferred.
