Fails to install route for targeted-broadcast

‎06-21-2019 12:15 AM

Hi,

we have three EX3400 configured in a Virtual Chassis that are handling our internal L3 routing. Since some time, we are trying to use targeted-broadcast to forward WoL messages across subnets. We installed Junos 18.1R3-S6 yesterday to resolve 1390629, and it started to work for some networks.

For others, we are seeing the following lines in /var/log/messages:

dc-pfe: brcm_rt_ip_uc_host_install:1509(ip host add/change failed) Reason :Invalid parameter
dc-pfe: brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install:1232brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install Error: host(/32) ip route install failed vrf 1 ip 10.201.9.255 nh-swidx 1664 nh-hwidx 100037
dc-pfe: brcm_rt_ip_uc_host_install:1509(ip host add/change failed) Reason :Invalid parameter
dc-pfe: brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install:1232brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install Error: host(/32) ip route install failed vrf 1 ip 10.201.10.255 nh-swidx 1684 nh-hwidx 100039
dc-pfe: brcm_rt_ip_uc_host_install:1509(ip host add/change failed) Reason :Invalid parameter
dc-pfe: brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install:1232brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install Error: host(/32) ip route install failed vrf 1 ip 10.201.8.255 nh-swidx 1688 nh-hwidx 100033

I have verified that targeted-broadcast does indeed not work for these networks. Looking at the error messages, they all have nh-hwidx > 100000. What is the meaning of that number and can I somehow find out the indices of the working networks? If I remember correctly, they were all added before the networks that don't work and have lower vlan-ids.

Any help would be appreciated, including experiences with later versions of Junos that don't have this problem. Thanks,

Jonas

How many VRFs do you have?

Could you try deactivate all targeted-broadcast for VRFS where it doesn't work and try to apply "targeted-broadcast" per VRF?

Will it report same problem after first of commit? if so, that is the reason to contact to JTAC.

Hello Jonas,

nh-hwidx

This is a next-hop hardware index no which get allocated to the prefix while add/change/install of a prefix, in our case route is keep on failing to install in hardware.

We only have the default inet routing instance and one of type forwarding for Filter-based Forwarding.

I've just

1) removed all targeted-broadcast knobs + commited

2) added back targeted-brodcast forward-only for the (three) working networks - no error messages at commit

3) added back configuration for one non-working network and received:

fpc1 brcm_rt_ip_uc_host_install:1509(ip host add/change failed) Reason :Invalid parameter
fpc1 brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install:1232brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install Error: host(/32) ip route install failed vrf 1 ip 10.201.9.255 nh-swidx 1916 nh-hwidx 100058
fpc2 brcm_rt_ip_uc_host_install:1509(ip host add/change failed) Reason :Invalid parameter
fpc2 brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install:1232brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install Error: host(/32) ip route install failed vrf 1 ip 10.201.9.255 nh-swidx 1916 nh-hwidx 100058
dc-pfe: brcm_rt_ip_uc_host_install:1509(ip host add/change failed) Reason :Invalid parameter
dc-pfe: brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install:1232brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install Error: host(/32) ip route install failed vrf 1 ip 10.201.9.255 nh-swidx 1916 nh-hwidx 100058
fpc0 brcm_rt_ip_uc_host_install:1509(ip host add/change failed) Reason :Invalid parameter
fpc0 brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install:1232brcm_rt_ip_uc_entry_install Error: host(/32) ip route install failed vrf 1 ip 10.201.9.255 nh-swidx 1916 nh-hwidx 100058

If I omit the second step and try the non-working networks first, I can also get three working networks, and any subsequent commit will print error messages (including for networks that worked before). So is there a hardware limitation to three networks? I remember that we had a working configuration for more networks with Junos 15.1X53.

Unfortunately, I don't think we can contact JTAC because we don't have a valid support contract, or am I misreading the requirements?

Hi Hahjno,

Please share these CLI outputs and the configuration you're keying in, so we can test if its really a limit for these networks or a PFE scale for your box.

Hope this helps.

What we want is a number of separated networks with clients. Currently we have 8 VLANs (for clients, the others don't need targeted-broadcast) with corresponding IRB interfaces, linked by l3-interface.

Thanks for your prompt replies!

Did anyone try to configure more than 3 networks with targeted-broadcast on their hardware or have further suggestions?

Thanks,

We installed the latest recommended version 18.2R3-S1, but are still facing the same issue - the same error message as above when configuring the forth route. Any ideas by the community?
