    Hi all,

I'm recently having issues conencting to one of my mx480 routers (Junos: 15.1F6-S2.3) routing engine console port.

    Trying xxxxx...
    Connected to xxxxx.
    Escape character is '^]'.

We've swapped the console cables from RE 1 to RE 0 to rule out any issues of cabling and / or configuration.

I''ve tested also with a direct console connection from my laptop into RE 0 but I still get no output.

No changes were made on the device in order to restrict or tamper with the console

access and I'm wondering if I need to enable or restart a process in order to regain console access.

Has anyone else come across this issue ?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

At the console terminal widow, type CTRL Z or CTRL X and try again.

Hope you're setting the right serial port values:

    https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/junos/topics/task/installation/port-mx960-console-aux-connecting.html

BTW, are you able too ssh? if yes, check the message logs and try to console, look out for abonrmal log?

If possible, could you restart mdg process (restart management) and try console?

    Hi karand,

We did set the console values correctly. As mentioed previously we swapped the consoles between the

REs and we could reach RE1 without issues, moreover we did manage to connect to RE1 also without issues using a laptop and acable.

I think I'll go by your recomandation of restarting mgd process though

(CTRL-X/CTRL-Z did not make a difference btw) and will report back.

PS: SSH is also working fine, no issues there.

    Regards,

    rei

    Hi spuluka,

Console is not disabled and it's not even defined under system .

My question though is if I restart the MGD process then will this affect in any way the forwarding plane ?

Since my issue is reaching via console, RE 0 which is Master right now do I need to

do a RE switchover and then execute the command so as not to potentally affect the forwarding plane  ?

    Thanks,

    rei

    Hi Rei,

Would suggest restart mgd before RE switch.

If restart the MGT or reboot RE and verify any session logs. And also try with Secure CRT or Putty with diffrent version of settings.

    Hi,

Its been a while, you still haven't restart MGD??
Prior restarting mgd,  try "commit full | display detail" once and then try to console.
BTW, I'd ask this previously, could you monitor the messages log (/var/log/messages) & look out for abonrmal log when you attempt to console the master RE.

    1. commit full | display detail. Once commit is completed, check for console.

    2. restart management.  Once MGD is restarted, wait for 30~40 secs and check for console.

    3. schdule a M/w for RE switch if step1 & 2 doesn't help. Prior switch, check following on RE to ensure RE is ready for switch:

    >show task replication
    >show database-replication summary
    >request chassis routing-engine master switch check
    >show system switchover (on backup RE)
    >request chassis routing-engine master switch (on master RE)

    Hi,

Sorry for the late reply but it takes time to perform an action on this particular router 🙂

Restarting the mgd process did not yield any results and console was still unavailabe.

So I switched the mastership and rebooted RE0 which brought back the console line.

    Connected to aa.bb.cc.dd
    Escape character is '^]'.

    FreeBSD/i386 (xxxx_RE0) (ttyu0)

    login:

    ---

    Model RE-S-2000
    Serial ID xxxxxxxxxxx
    Start time 2018-04-05 04:45:38 CEST
    Uptime 6 days, 4 hours, 57 minutes, 46 seconds
Last reboot reason Router rebooted after a normal shutdown.

Thank you all for your input,

    rei
