Does anyone here know specifically what features are "disabled" in the MX80 platform without the S-MX80-ADV-R license?  The license description says "License to support full scale L3 route and L3 VPN on MX80", but I cannot seem to locate any information as to what exact features are "full scale L3".

It is very similar to the older DPCE-X vs DPCE-R comparison.

 

There are no L3 features at scale without the license.  The layer3 license gets you greater than 32,000 IPv4 prefixes and L3VPN support.  All of the routing protocols are intact.

Thank you Jack, our local Juniper engineer told me the same thing on Friday. I apologize for not adding the reply myself. It seems odd how little documentation there is on this subject. I also wish Juniper would keep the "advanced" feature set the same across different platforms. It gets especially confusing to try to determine when a particular feature license is needed.

Hi, do you have any supporting documentation to show the exact limitations.  I have searched all the usual places, release notes, tech notes, data sheets.  I need something to show to a Juniper Partner who is asking me the same questions from a pre-sales perspective.

You should talk to your SE.  As a rule, Juniper doesn't post performance data about products, because there are too many combinations per customer that could affect the actual performance seen by customers.  Also, most of the performance data is "tested" and not the upper limit of that particular feature.  For example, the MX80 has been tested to more than 2000 eBGP peers.

 

By default, you get full Layer2 support, including L2VPN, VPLS, L2Circuits, Bridging (switching), OSPF, BGP, RIP, ISIS and a limited number of L3 Routes (32,000), COS.

 

For the licensing, after the base Junos Software license you have two additional choices:

 

• License to support full scale L3 route and L3 VPN on MX80 - S-MX80-ADV-R

• License to support per VLAN queuing on MX80 (only available on modular MX80) - S-MX80-Q

Yes.  The MX80 can take a full BGP feed from a provider (~ 4 million routes in RIB)

I have all l3 protocols without the ADV license. If I need more than 32k route entries I need to buy this license. It's correct?

Yes.  The Advanced License is for >32k routes and L3VPN.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't understand how my MX80-AC can support the full BGP feed, and only 32k routes? We purchased a MX80-AC in january, and we have configured full BGP & L3VPN without any problem

there is no need to install the license.

the advanced L3 features are not enforced at all ! and actually you should allready know it because you have a full bgp feed ( more than 32k routes ) without any problem.

i guess this is only for support questions and to be honest with juniper which demand this licence in your case.

Hello - to help clarify, we've received confirmation from our Juniper rep that you indeed require the advanced license (S-MX80-ADV-R) to support more than 32K routes and enabling L3VPN.Apparently you'll need to activate this license via CLI after buying the license similar to a PAK.This applies to all configurable platforms:

MX80-T, MX80-P, MX80 MX80-48T

 

Here's the description on our ordering guide:

 

"Advanced Routing License to Support high scale IPv4 routes and L3VPN; Increases IPv4 scale to 1M routes from 32K routes available on JUNOS"

 

According to our ordering guide this functionality comes bundled in with the bundles:

Bundled with MX5-T, MX10-T and MX40-T.
