Multicast routing in virtual-router instance

[ Edited ]

Hello everyone.

I`m trying to set up PIM in routing instance.

The scheme is like this:

xe-2/0/0.718 (multicast source) ---->MX104----> ge-0/1/0(Multicast client)

On source interface i got group 233.33.183.54

MX configuration:

show configuration interfaces xe-2/0/0.718
description SOURCE; vlan-id 718; family inet { address 192.168.6.1/24; }

show configuration interfaces ge-0/1/0
unit 0 {
description "Client";
family inet {
address 192.168.10.1/24;
}
}

show configuration interfaces lo0.1
family inet {
address 192.168.100.1/32;
}

show configuration routing-instances IPTV
instance-type virtual-router;
interface ge-0/1/0.0;
interface xe-2/0/0.718;
interface lo0.1;
protocols {
pim {
rp {
local {
address 192.168.100.1;
group-ranges {
233.33.183.54/32;
}
}
}
interface ge-0/1/0.0;
interface xe-2/0/0.718;
}
}

 From client i send join:

 show pim join instance IPTV
Instance: PIM.IPTV Family: INET
R = Rendezvous Point Tree, S = Sparse, W = Wildcard

Group: 233.33.183.54
    Source: *
    RP: 192.168.100.1
    Flags: sparse,rptree,wildcard
    Upstream interface: Local

Group: 239.255.255.250
    Source: 192.168.10.2
    Flags: sparse,spt
    Upstream interface: ge-0/1/0.0

But nothing works.

maybe the reason is that the RP is only valid for the .57

and the multicast source has .54 address

I`m sorry

233.33.183.54

is in group-ranges not

233.33.183.57

So routing-instance cfg is

instance-type virtual-router;
interface ge-0/1/0.0;
interface xe-2/0/0.718;
interface lo0.1;
protocols {
pim {
rp {
local {
address 192.168.100.1;
group-ranges {
233.33.183.54/32;
}
}
}
interface ge-0/1/0.0;
interface xe-2/0/0.718;
}
}

Hello,

Check the TTL in multicast packets. If the source is another JNPR box and You are pinging the mcast IP, the TTL ==1 by default. If the source is a PC with VLC, it also uses default TTL==1 for multicast.

Thx

i`ve checked TTL. Looks like its ok.

I`ve tried to ping multicast from my juniper box, but had no luck.

run ping 233.33.183.54 routing-instance IPTV bypass-routing interface xe-2/0/0.718

Do You have an IGMP join from the receiver?

show igmp group detail

- will reveal it.

 If Your source is not the member of 233.33.183.54 multicast group then pinging source with mcast group IP is worthless.

The problem was not on MX side. Above configuration is correct and should work. The problem was with inet address on uplink side.
