  • 1.  OSPF Route Types Preference

    In OSPF

     

    1. Is there a way to prefer inter-area routes over intra-area routes.

    2. External routes over inter-area/intra-area routes.

    Hello,

     

    RFC2328, Section 11 clearly explains the order of preference which is:

     

    1) Intra Area

    2) Inter Area

    3) External routes E1

    4) External routes E2

    I do not think it is possible to select Inter Area route over Intra Area route or External routes over inter/intra area route for an OSPF process.

    As per Juniper technical document "Controlling OSPF Route Preference", it is possible to possible to prefered external route over intra area route. As per document we need to twick ospf preference vlaue as per requirement. Refer below url for more understanding.

    The article talks about preferring IS-IS over OSPF which is not the question. I agree with Rushi, I am pretty sure these are the rules of OSPF and even if you change metrics and preferences it wont make a difference.
