What's the difference between MX204, MX204-IR and MX204-R

    Hi Folks,

can you tell me what's the difference betwenn these 3 models of the MX204?

MX204 JNP204/MX204 Fixed 1 RU System includes 3 Fan Trays and 2 Power Supplies
MX204-IR JNP204/MX204 Fixed 1 RU System -IR MODE includes 3 Fan Trays and 2 Power Supplies
MX204-R JNP204/MX204 Fixed 1 RU System -R MODE includes 3 Fan Trays and 2 Power Supplies

Can I assume that the differences for the MPCs described here also apply to the MX204/MX204-IR/MX204-R?

Also very interesting to know is if you can upgrade the base MX204 to an MX204-IR or MX204-R through a license?

    Thank you for your answers!
    Falco

    Hi Falco,

you are absolutely correct. The licensing matches the MPC scaling you are refering to.

On MX204 and MX10003 also HQoS and Jflow is included the SKU where on MX240/480/960 you need extra licenses on top.

You can buy the MX204 base SKU and upgrade it later to either -IR or -R via the 'S-MX104-IR' and 'S-MX104-R' licenses. Just remember to reach -R scaling, you need to purchase both licenses (but the tocal cost is the same as buying MX204-R from the start).

If you buy an upgrade to -IR or -R you also need seperate support SKUs on the licenses - but again the total cost is the same as buying the combined support.

Bonus information: The MX204 is about to be included in the Juniper Flex Program where you buy the "base/IR/R" scale via a subscription on top MX204 base hardware. I cannot find any official pages specific to MX204 but the general page for the flex program is here: https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/licensing/topics/topic-map/juniper-flex-program.html

There will only be an advanced and premium SKU for MX204. Reach out to your local account manager to get more information. For now the existing -IR and -R SKUs will still be orderable for some time 🙂

I hope this was the information you were looking for.

    Hello,

I would like to know if you could advise the maximum number of routing-instances support on MX204 with base/R/IR mode?

    Regards,

    Hi Seyma,

MX204-IR has no FIB restrictions but has a 32 VRF limit.

MX204-R has no restrictions so you can go to full FIB 10M & no VRF limits either.

"MX204-R has no restrictions so you can go to full FIB 10M & no VRF limits either."

The "no VRF limits" here mean we can use as many as we want?

    Hi Seyma,

Yes, there has been no limit for VRF's. However, its been tested with '6050 VRF's' in scale test. If you want to know any further information, I would suggest you to get in touch with your account team, they will share the complete scale test results with you.

    Hi ,

Can you share a documented test, or datasheets for this one? We really just can't tell customers that we just read the difference  (IR to R licenses) from a discussionn forums.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi Akash,

is MX204 licensing same as licensing for the EX Series? and how to activate the license? there is no documentation that mention how to activate the license.

MX licensing is honorbased meaning that you receive a "right to use" (RTU) certficate which license you have purchased. There are currently no limitations in the software or alerts if you configure features not purchased.

With the flex licensing program this will potentially change over time - but only with nagging alerts if you go outside the limits of the license.

    Hi,

Does anyone know how to check the mode (base, -IR, -R) of a MX204 with CLI ?

I tried show chassis hardware extensive and show system license but it doesn't seem to be the appropriate commands.

    Thank you.

    Posted 11-25-2019 12:21

    Hi Alexis,

all scale licenses on MX are honor based and there is no way to show your purchased licensing level via the cli. Via the entitlement search tool you can see which level the MX204 was initially purchased with but not if you have upgraded with higher scale in a seperate order.... so technically you can go full MX204-R without any limitations other than your own bad conscience...

You can register on the device if you are running base, IR or R mode via this command - but it's pure documentation. This also works on chassis based MX's where you can configure it per MPC.

    user@mx204# set chassis fpc 0 ir-mode ?
    Possible completions:
      IR Set IR mode
      R Set R mode
    user@mx204# set chassis fpc 0 ir-mode

Juniper is working towards a model where you will get notification when going above your level but I would not expect to see this happen for at least a year from now. This model is called the "Flex Program" - more information here: https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/licensing/topics/topic-map/juniper-flex-program.html

    Entitlement search tool: https://entitlementsearch.juniper.net/entitlementsearch/

I hope this at least answers your question - but not necessarily what you expected 🙂

Thanks Jonas for your answer. I came to this conclusion to use the entitlement tool 🙂

    Hello Jonas!

Can you tell me what the IR / R equivalent of the Advanced and Premium licenses of the Flex Program would be? Or does it not have an exact correlation?

    Thank you!

    Hi Lucas,

in general IR is very close to advanced and R is basically matching premium.

There are still some minor differences like with the old MX204-IR/R you had full scale jflow where with the flex licensing it's only sampling in advanced.

IR/R scale and features described here: https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/licensing/topics/topic-map/software_licensing_requirements.html#LicenseVariantsForMPCs-8A6ACE53

Flex advanced and premium described here: https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/licensing/topics/concept/flex-software-subscription-model-support.html#mx-mpc

If you have a specific question regarding which tier you need, please state your requirements and I'll do my best to help 🙂
