We trying to setup flow monitoring and wanted to know if we can do basic flow capture without jflow license.
i have this card on MX 480: MPC Type 2 3D Q
The requirment is to export fingres flow on transit link with provider. this info is sent to an IRP (inteligent routing platform) that is to monitor transit links and analyses which prefix is best on which link. if it the IRP finds that prefx A is bad on transt A, it will change the active path for prefix A to transit B.
that is roughly why the flow info is needed. incase the flow export is not working properly we have the option of port mirroring on the tranist links ( am not sure the effect of this on the FPC as it will be not be removed once setup).
For sampled jflow on MPCs you need either a license per MPC (S-ACCT-JFLOW-IN) or per chassis (in your case S-JFLOW-CH-MX480). On top there is also support. So if you don't intend to invest in these licenses, you are back to using portmirror.
Bonus information: MX204 and MX10003 series has license for Jflow included in the base SKU so there is no extra license cost. From a cost perspective it can make sense to looks at these compared to the license and support price on jflow licenses.
