Bandwidth Policers

‎09-20-2019 03:26 AM

Hello

We have a 500 megabit internet connection and we are wanting to police the bandwidth to 50 megabit per tenancy.

I am unsure as to what to set the burst rate to as I don't want it to be set too high but at the same time I don't want it to cause packets to drop, causing problems for our customers.

I am using the following commands:

set firewall policer BKU-policer-50mb
set firewall policer BKU-policer-50mb if-exceeding bandwidth-limit 50m
set firewall policer BKU-policer-50mb if-exceeding burst-size ?
set firewall policer BKU-policer-50mb then discard

I have tried using the formulas below to calculate the burst rate but both seem to give very different rates;

burst size = bandwidth x allowable time for burst traffic / 8

burst size = interface MTU x 10

Can anyone advise further?

Thanks

Check out this link

Two ways to set burst size as you mentioned. For the second, BW * Time, the timer can be anywhere betweeb 10ms to 500ms as long as your HW has that much of buffer
