SRX100 IPv6 PPPoE - No DHCPv6 available!?

‎03-28-2012 03:45 AM

I am lucky enough to have an ISP that offers a native IPv6 alongside their IPv4 connectivity.  However, I'm having difficulty configuring this to work on the IPv6 side of things.  They push out my static IP/routes etc using DHCPv6, but there doesn't appear to be a way for me to specify this in the config.  Any guidance would be appreciated.

    point-to-point;
    ppp-options {
        chap {
            default-chap-secret "DELETED"; ## SECRET-DATA
            local-name "DELETED;
            passive;
        }
    }
    pppoe-options {
        underlying-interface fe-0/0/0.0;
        idle-timeout 0;
        auto-reconnect 60;
        client;
    }
    no-keepalives;
    family inet {
        mtu 1492;
        negotiate-address;
    }
    family inet6 {
        mtu 1492;
        # NO negotiate-address?!
    }
}

Not sure if this applies in your case, but from the 11.4 release notes:

"SRX Series and J Series devices do not support DHCPv6 client authentication."

Really crappy imo.

That appears to be a huge deficiency... I assume there's no ETA on when this will be fixed?

While I know this doc is for 10.4, it seems to contradict itself:

http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos10.4/information-products/topic-collections/security/soft...

In one place it says taht DHCPv6 is supported, and another it says not (search for DHCPv6; there are just the two matches).  Does this suggest that I can roll back to 10.4 and get this functionaliry?

I played around with this a while back, but from what i remember DHCPv6 is only supported as a server - for prefix delegations and such. In your case you want it to run as i client, which is not supported.

I could be wrong though.

Right, that makes sense, even if it is infuriating.

So, what I'm thinking is this: my allocated range doesn't change, so I can statically configure that quite happily.

However, the routes, according to my ISP, are subject to change.  So what I'm thinking is getting a list of all the possible routes, and adding them as static routes, and having the Juniper just use whichever one/ones I can hit.

This seems ugly, likely to break, and probably not a good idea though.

This is for a DHCPv6 SERVER not client, so it isn't useful at all.

Are there links on DHCPv6 client currently on Juniper links?
I'm also searching for it...
Thanks!

Hi,

This is Srinath from SRX TAC.

Just wanted to let you know that pp0 interface is not supported as a DHCPv6 client.

This is confirmed for all active releases currently available (11.n till 15.1X release train) as as such there seem to be no plans to support this feature.

If this is an absolute requiremtn for you then please contact your accounts team to open an Enhancement request for this.

If an enhancement request is already open for this, then they will be able to telll you when this might be supported from.

Higher the number of customers who want this feature, higher the chances of this feature being added in upcoming Junos releases.

Note for others: If your setup does not involve pp0 and you are trying to use a normal GE interface as DHCPv6 client, and if it is not working, please do open a JTAC case so that we can confirm if this is supported as of now or not

Regards,

Srinath
