In a 650 cluster running 10.4R7.5 (or 6.5) if I try to use the third or fourth chassis ge ports as a fab or anything else,

plugging in a cable trashes both the management and control ports of one or both 650s, a blinking lights chase <g>

Move to ports on a PIM and it all works ... after a restart.

For what ever reason I'm having to ignore these two(four) ports ... am I missing something ?

Same code, same'ish config works fine on a pair of 100s.

Did you remove the default config from those ports? Here's a related post that may help:

Yep, zero'ed the configs on both and added minimal lines necessary.

Since I'd not used the ge-0/0/2+3 before, I'll now test those ports non-clustered and without any pims.

So, about to start-from-scratch (again) with LOTS of traceoptions and try to suss it out.

I'll do a proper writeup. an hopefully not look too foolish, when I find the problem.

After an RE BIOS upgrade from 1.9 -> 2.1 the ports work as either inet or fab !

    fab0 ge-0/0/2 up
    fab0 ge-0/0/3 up
    fab1 ge-9/0/2 up
    fab1 ge-9/0/3 up

We still have to wait a few min for whatever causes these messages, but ...
melb-srx-02 melb-srx-02 SCHED: Thread 39 (FWDD CM) ran for 1661 ms without yielding

BUT I'll live with it ... I really don't want to resurrect

    Hi,

I dont fully understand the process, but this could work. It is RE bios upgrade procedure. If it is not update, you could do it manually (search for Manual BIOS Upgrade on SRX Series Devices)
