  • 1.  Cannot add a second IPSEC tunnel to SSG5 - Phase 1 packet arrived from an unrecognized peer gateway

    Posted 12-30-2008 12:33

I'm a newbie to the firewall world, so apologies in advance...

I have one SSG5 (dynamic IP) and two SSG140s (static IPs) and three sites.  All devices are version 6.0.0r4.0.  I've been able to establish a simple route-based IPSEC VPN tunnel with pre-shared keys between the SSG5 and each SSG140 - but never at the same time.  The second SSG140 always shows the following error:

"Rejected an IKE packet on ethernet0/2 from x.x.x.x:500 to y.y.y.y:500 with cookies 1e2cd06510b756f7 and 0000000000000000 because An initial Phase 1 packet arrived from an unrecognized peer gateway."

Basically, I'm just cloning the working VPN configs in the VPNs>AutoKey Advanced>Gateway, VPNs>AutoKey IKE, Network>Routing>Destination, Network>Interface, andPolicy>Policies sections of the WebGui. These configs work alone, but not in tandem.  Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Dennis

    Hi,

Can you post the configs of the 3 firewalls and remember to mask any sensitive data.

    Regards

    Hi,

Do you get the same message if you connect ot the second ssg140 first and then connect to the other ssg140?

    Regards

It seems to matter which connection is created first.  The first connection I define on the SSG5 works but the second one doesn't.  If blast the SSG5 config and create a connection to the other SSG140, it works.  Powering off the "working" SSG140 doesn't help the SSG5 connect to the other SSG140.

Hmm, config looks ok. Might be worth doing a "debug ike detail" this should show us some more informaiton about the messages that are being received.

If you do the following from the cli on the second ssg that fails when you try to connect both vpns.

    "debug ike detail"

    "clear db"

connect the vpn to the first site and then get the vpn to connect to the second site so that we should see the error message in the debug that we are running.

once you see theerror message in the event log then

    "get db str"

    Copy and post the output.

    "undebug all"

I have replaced the SSG5's dynamic IP address with "x.x.x.x".  The following events were logged every 4 seconds.

Well, I got it working.  Funny, but I read another post on this forum from a guy who fixed a similar problem by redoing and rebooting again and again.  Add me to the list!

I did change the local ID of the SSG5 to something new.  The two defined gateways on the (dynamic IP) SSG5 always had unique local IDs, though.  (Not that I know if they should be unique!)

Thanks for your help Andy.  At least I learned how to turn on debug.

    Cheers,
