    Hi Chris,

please open a case with JTAC for this.

I wouldn't recommend deleting files or reformatting the flash subsystem without support.

    Kind regards

    Colin

Not sure if this will work, but you can try to break the boot seqeunce and upgrade the boot loader as well.

Just press "X" and "A" when you see the  following:

    NetScreen NS-ISG 2000 BootROM V1.0.0 (Checksum: 7E8EDC43)
Copyright (c) 1997-2004 NetScreen Technologies, Inc.

    Total physical memory: 1024MB
        Test - Pass
        Initialization........ Done

Hit key 'X' and 'A' sequentially to update OS Loader....

I've seen this once before and if I recall correctly Jtac had me RMA the box.

Hopefully they will help you get it cleared up pretty quickly.

    Good luck,

    Hi,

We experienced the same problem with SSG5 and our workaround was to reformat the flash FBTL.

    CAUTION:

Make sure you're familiar loading software thru TFTP server.

The procedure will erase the bootloader and ScreenOS image so make sure you have a copy of those files in a TFTP server as well as backup of configuration file important file ie certs, license keys.

    Procedure:

    1. Try to boot the SSG from TFTP server and once booted up and logged-in thru console, execute the following command:

                   ssg5-serial-> exec vfs fbtlformat 0

    2. Load bootloader

Follow the prompt to specify SSG self IP, TFTP server IP, and bootloader filename.

When asked, save to flash? No, run bootloader? Yes.

It will then ask to hit any key to reboot

After reboot it will complain about missing flash

    ### cannot find boot sector ###

Hit any key to run loader
Hit any key to run loader
Hit any key to run loader
Hit any key to run loader

    ### invalid on-board internal flash disk ###

    3. Load ScreenOS

Follow the prompt to specify SSG self IP, TFTP server IP, and ScreenOS filename.

    Follow answers the following prompts:

Save to on-board flash disk? (y/[n]/m) Yes!

Are you sure you want to format on-board flash disk? (y/n) Yes!

Run downloaded system image? ([y]/n) Yes!

It will then start loading the ScreenOS image, initialize FBTL 0, and then load NVRAM information.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi everyone,

I just recovered an ISG-1000 out of from the same problem. I used the steps above. Just had to tftp the software on flash before giving a final restart and all was well.

But I still do not know as to why the firewall crashed at first place. What made the firewall fill up the flash...maybe a crash dump? maybe logs? . To  Avoid future crashing I am now interested in finding out why the flash gets full and is unable to write any further.

Formatting the fbtl helped too..but what exactly is fbtl and why did it get full or corrupt at first place. Why was the format required. I have all these questions in mind right now for which I cannot find any answer.

I hope someone from Juniper ScreenOS development team can give me answers to this.
