SSG5 keeps dropping connection to Shaw modem

‎04-04-2019 09:50 AM

Little history have a lihts and water system connected to the juniper which is remotely controlled from another location.  The issue is that the connection between the shaw modem and the juniper loses connection with then of course means that i can't connect to the Torro watering system.  Connection only comes back up when i ask shaw to reboot the Modem. It then works for a random amount of time could be between 4-24 hours.  Shaw modem never goes offline and they say that the juniper isn't asking for an address anymore.  The juniper has a static address.  I have swapped out the juniper for a different one with a newer firmware and still the same issue.  I have also set a laptop on the juniper to have a continuose ping out to google and that sill doen'st keep up the connection.  I have swapped out the shaw modem and all cables and devices.

Any Ideas would be apprecieated.

Thanks

Ryan

I'm having trouble seeing what hardware Shaw uses and the technology for the client handoff method.

You mentioned this is a static ip address, how is the interface facing the Shaw ISP configured?

When the site goes down will only a reboot of the Shaw modem help or does rebooting the SSG also clear the connection?

Shaws modem is in bridged mode.  I inherited this network so not sure of all the settings are correct but it was working and then just stopped out of the blue.  Shaw ISP had been going around and upgrading all there modems and speeds in the area around this time and have now upgraged ours aswell.  Not sure if this has any impact or not.   eth0/0 to a static ip in an untrusted zone set to auto negotiate (i ahve changed the speeds aswell didn't make any difference).  I have a trusted bgroup0 with a 192 range that the lantronix device sits on.  Also I had mentioned earlier that if there was a laptop connected to the juniper and ping out that the connection would still go down but thats not the case.  If i have a laptop pinging out then it will stay up.  As soon as I remove the laptop off the 192 then i loose connection to the watering system that night.

I currently have a laptop plugged directly into the shaw modem with a different static ip address and range.  It did lose its connection after one day. So shaw suggested that we use a dynamic ip for testing on the laptop and that never lost connection.  So I have put it back onto the static range  sepperate of the Junipers range to see if it loses its connection again.  Its been 2 days now and it hasn't lost connection.  Im thinking its a SHAW issue but they arn't admitting it.

When I do lose connection to the juniper a reboot of the SHAW modem resolves the issuse no i don't need to reboot the juniper.

If ou need any other info please let me know.

We service providers like to eliminate firewalls when testing that is why the laptop connection test failing was particularly bad for Shaw.  So they keep modifying that test to get one to work and wash their hands of the issue.

The other information that only rebooting the modem works.  And that the issue seems to be tied to having no traffic for an extended time, that running a continuous ping fixes it.  Also points to a modem issue.

As a work around to you have a monitoring system that can poll some device on the site every minute?

that might generate the needed traffic to keep the line up.

If the new static ip on the laptop works you might also try moving over to that address as an option as well.
