Hello,

I've got a netscreen 5gt but do not have the username and password for it, so I would like to factory reset it. I have tried the both options to do it. I have tried by connecting to it by the serial cable and putting in the serial no. of the firewall but when i do so it displays

!!! Lost Password Reset !!! You have initiated a command to reset the device to factory defaults, clearing all current configuration and settings. Would you lie to continue? y/[n]

i try putting in y but nothing happens.

The other thing i tried was:

Locate the reset pinhole on the rear panel. Using a thin, firm wire (such as a
paper clip), push the pinhole for four to six seconds and then release.
The Status LED blinks amber. A message on the Console states that erasure of
the configuration has started and the system sends an SNMP/SYSLOG alert.
2. Wait for one to two seconds.
After the first reset, the power LED blinks green; the NetScreen-5GT is now
waiting for the second push. The Console message now states that it is waiting
for a second confirmation.
3. Push the reset pinhole again for four to six seconds.
The Status LED lights amber for one-half second, and then returns to the
blinking green state.
4. The NetScreen-5GT resets to its original factory settings.
When it resets, the Status LED turns amber for one-half second and then
returns to the blinking green state. The Console message states that the
configuration is erased and the unit is reset. The system generates SNMP and
SYSLOG alerts to configured SYSLOG or SNMP trap hosts.
5. The NetScreen-5GT restarts.

as stated in the manual.

This is what i get when I do this

 so this does not work either.

I don't know much about this kind of firewall but i will post the boot loading txt from the console

Well, for one odd reason, the next morning everything worked out just fine. So everithing is good for the time being.

I am also facing same problem. Could you pple pls guide what can be the problem?

When you use the pin reset method you have to do the pin reset twice in a specified period as a confirmation.  I have found this maddenly difficult to accomplish.  The simpler method is to log into the console cable with the serial number of the device.  Then this asks you to confirm a factory reset with a simple yes/no prompt.

Be aware that there is a configuration option to turn off pin reset and console reset so if these are active you won't be allowed to do the function.

The KB5046 describes the process.

I have solved the problem with the factory reset after some time. by using the pin hole method. after the factory reset i have upgraded to 5.4.0r17.0 and all is running smooth. i do have some problems to set the vip rules aka port forward but with perseverence all will be solved.

If nothing happens when you reply with "Y", then check your terminal application.  I use Putty with the default settings and was able to successfully clear three units using the serial number as login and serial number.
