Food Exploits at Black Hat Asia

By Erdem posted 03-20-2014 18:40

The last time the Black Hat information security conference was in Asia was way back in 2008, so it’s great to see it back in Asia – and in Singapore at the Marina Bay Sands this year.

But between the keynote from ICANN chairman Dr Steve Crocker, a packed schedule of security talks and briefings, and dropping by the Juniper Booth (A5) at Black Hat Asia, your visit to Singapore will not be complete if you miss the huge variety of local cuisine that the city has to offer.

There are tons of fancy restaurants close to the event venue itself, but if you want a little adventure and try some of the local signature dishes, get into a set of comfortable clothes (think t-shirt and bermudas for the guys cos it gets pretty warm out there), and head on down to one of the country’s many hawker centers – essentially the local version of food courts.

The closest would be the Makansutra Gluttons Bay hawker center, but locals will tell you to head on down to Maxwell Road Hawker Center, a five minute cab ride away from the Marina Bay Sands, and on the edge of Chinatown, for a more authentic selection of local food. Over there, you can find an array of great cheap local eats such as Tian Tian Chicken Rice (open only till the afternoon though) and a whole host of other local goodies like rojak.

And for the foodies who are even more adventurous, you can try to hunt down some of the places in this list of hawker stalls with a hipper twist run by a younger generation of hawkers that inject a new twist to curries, soups and one (The Good Beer Company in Chinatown Smith Street hawker center) even boasts a wide selection of craft beers from all around the world!

But of course if you don’t want to sweat it out, you can also give the chicken rice at Chatterbox at Meritus Mandarin Hotel a go – but it’ll cost you US$22 vs the US$3 at a hawker center.

Let us know what you like best!
