Elite Makes the most out of Juniper’s Next Generation MX Series 3D Edge Routers and Virtualisation Technologies
Jul 1, 2016

Elite has been an Internet service provider (ISP) for almost 20 years, holding the title as one of the UK’s oldest and most highly peered. Elite provides a range of high-tech services such as business grade Internet connectivity, co-location, cloud and VoIP services to an extensive range of channel partners throughout the United Kingdom. Furthermore, Elite works with some of the UK’s most well-known companies, from energy to transport and government, working to resolve technology issues and bring unparalleled service quality levels. Working with such a technical and high-profile customer base means Elite must stay ahead of the curve and invest heavily in new technologies to keep service levels at a high.

Elite moved all of its business away from another well-known vendor to Juniper Networks three years ago, due to its old vendor’s lack of flexibility and inability to effectively support its own equipment and software in a timely manner. At a network level, this approach can be detrimental to business and onboarding new customers.

After successful testing and implementation of Juniper Networks SRX Series Services Gateways in our network and on our customer sites, we gradually integrated Juniper Networks vSRX Virtual Firewalls and Juniper Networks MX480 3D Universal Edge Routers into our core, in a fully redundant configuration. The vSRX allows us to limit our environmental impact by reducing the volume of hardware needed to deliver a solution. Not to mention the cost savings on energy which has also limited our environmental impact. By implementing the virtual SRX infrastructure, we have been able to offer more affordable MPLS and VPN solutions, which have a much higher level of scalability and resiliency as the client grows and adds more connections. As for the Juniper Networks MX480 3D Universal Edge Router, this has boosted our overall ability to handle extreme amounts of traffic (up to 5Tbps) and has boosted our routing performance exponentially. Moreover, the MX480 has enabled Elite to support clients like never before and secure our name as an ISP built on quality.

Planning for an entire network adoption and testing was a crucial factor to the success of the migration. Along with the help of our Juniper Partner, Axians, we replicated our entire network inside a virtual test environment to provide a proof-of-concept environment, as well as perform numerous stress tests, before the  production stage. Our overall experience with Juniper has been fantastic. Juniper’s account management, technical support and expertise assisted us in implementing our solution. The carrier-grade hardware works faultlessly, even under demanding pressure.

Elite’s next-gen carrier network is now fully operational and has its entire customer base already migrated and we are seeing superb results. Elite’s network is more resilient, secure and able to cope faultlessly with current and future demand. Elite has a clear strategy on business growth and the MX480 upgrade now provides a simple upgrade path from our multiple 10Gbps connections to multiple 100Gbps. We are also able to manage and see what's happening across our entire infrastructure estate, which gives us highly efficient fault-finding capabilities. These are all advantages of using carrier-grade equipment.
