How Liquid is your Data Center Network?

So you have virtualized your compute and storage data center resources to improve business continuity and attain a certain level of agility. Congratulations!

Now, how do you get to the next level and either grow and expand your business or improve and sustain your operations? Given today’s application-driven economy, elastic business operations and being able to respond to changing market dynamics are becoming table stakes. The challenge lies in getting to the next level. - achieving the liquidity of data center resources required to deliver IT as a service (ITaas) or spin up, divert or throttle your applications and resources based on demand.

Ultimately, it boils down to your network’s ability to mirror the liquidity of resources. A purely physical network cannot scale sufficiently or maintain the asset migration liquidity you require. What you need is a virtualized network.

So, should you be virtualizing 100% of your network? This would depend on your business requirements. For example, legacy applications that need to run on physical servers, or compliance requirements can rule out a 100% virtualized environment. That means you need some combination of the two, which presents a new challenge: how to connect your physical and virtual infrastructure to avoid broken connectivity.

VMware Layer2 NSX Gateways can bridge the connectivity gap between physical and virtual networks, helping you maintain the liquidity of your data center resources.

As you build your virtual network infrastructure overlay to improve data center resource liquidity, you need a solid foundation—an underlying network that is reliable, scalable, high performing and predictable.  Operational simplicity and the efficiency that comes with it are key factors that contribute to the “solidity” of that underlay network. Without that solid foundation, you cannot get to the point where you can move workloads around, deliver the necessary application experience, or remain agile.

Operations are simplified when you reduce the number of devices you have to manage. Likewise, application performance is improved by lowering latency. This is critical to improving or sustaining your business operations. When you are growing or expanding your business, the ability to scale and add a diverse number of connection speeds at your own pace delivers the flexibility your business demands. Deploying switching fabrics such as Juniper’s Virtual Chassis Fabric technology in the underlay helps you achieve your objectives.
