Looking to build a test lab for JNCIA

Hi all,

I am looking to build myself a small test lab to get ready to take on the Juniper routing, then switching then firewall exams. What type of equipment would you guys recommend.

I would like to go for my JNCIA as soon as possible for those who have Juniper and Cisco certifications is there a big difference betwen JNCIA and CCNA except for the proprietary commands?

Thanks for the reponses

I would say you could get by with a single J series router - J2350 as an example. The router supports virtual-routers so within the one box you can build out an entire network. Then pick up a couple of low end firewalls 5GT, or SSG5 and you would be set. You can build out one heck of a network with that simple setup, and then if you wanted to go forward on switching a EX3200 would be a lot of fun.

Juniper provides the "Fast Track" program which gives you access to the training documentation for the JNCIA-ER, JNICS-ER, JNICS-ES (JUNOS Enhanced Services) and JNCIA-EX exams.

These training docs and lab guides will get you 85% - 90% of the way towards the exams in routing and switching.

Sweet thanks I signed up for the fast track can't wait to nail down these certs. Are J series routers the lowest end. Does Juniper have routers equivalent to a Cisco 2621?

The J series routers are the lowest end. The lowest of the low is the J2320 which replaced the J2300. It is not in the same price point as a 2621 in the grey/aftermarket but if you work with your reseller (saw your other post about your network buildout) they should be able to get you a very sweet price. That is a nice firewall order Smiley Happy

You have replied to a several year old post. The world of Juniper has changed a lot. If you are looking to build a lab today you have many different options.

The Juniper SRX FW is available as a very low cost device and you can also ge the virtual version of it (Junos-V Firefly Host). You can run the SRX is either flow mode or packet based.

Then there is JunosSphere which lets you build very complex networks, all in a virtual environment but is fee based from Juniper.

Besides eBay there are used equipment brokers out there like Network Hardware Resale. You should also look around your community and reach out to your local reseller.

Speaking as a reseller - we get requests from customers to help them dump old gear, and sometimes have gear of own to dump.

so two paths for you.
